"THOUGH THIS BE MADNESS...": SHAKESPEARE AND MENTAL ILLNESS
“CHOĆ TO SZALEŃSTWO...”: SHAKESPEARE I CHOROBA UMYSŁOWA
The course will focus on a number of Shakespeare’s plays in which different kinds of mental disturbances are represented: King Lear, Hamlet, As You Like It (melancholy), The Winter’s Tale (obsession), Macbeth (hallucination). It will attempt to analyse ways in which the “effect” of madness is constructed by the playwright and attend to functions it serves in the universe of his plays as well as ask whether these translate into our contemporary experience. |
